Movin’ Out

The Marines of Regimental Combat Team 1 are packing there bags and moving to Ramadi.
RCT-1 was the first Regiment to call Camp Fallujah their home, and now they will be the last Marine regiment to inhabit the base that has housed four different regimental combat teams throughout the course of Operation Iraqi Freedom: RCTs one, eight, five, and six. RCT-1 is the only regiment to operate from Camp Fallujah twice.
I often wonder what the Marines who were present during the invasion would think if they could see Camp Fallujah and the city of Fallujah now.
I spent my first deployment in 2006 in the city of Fallujah, and the difference between then and now is amazing. I can’t even imagine the difference from 2004 until now.
Fallujah is rebuilding; there new schools and bridges being rebuilt and buildings that used to be launching pads for heinous acts against Coalition forces now house government officials.
The city, once deemed a lost cause or the Wild West, has quickly become the shining example of what Coalition and Iraqi forces are capable of doing.
With all the advancements, Coalition forces are stepping down as the tip of the spear and turning over major areas of operation to the Government of Iraq.
The progress throughout Iraq is a direct reflection of the dedication of American warriors and proud Iraqi’s setting aside differences and working together to improve a country that was brought to its knees by tyrants.
It has been the heart and determination of the American service member that has helped the Iraqi people walk their streets safer and prouder than ever.
The Marines and sailors who fought diligently, enduring some of the worst house to house fighting since Hue City, are responsible for setting the foundation for the great advances the Iraqi people are making, as well as the safety and security of Coalition forces.
Those who came before us paved a road stained with their own blood, and every positive event is a direct reflection of their sacrifices.
